I used Saturday to help a friend with some painting and carpentry in a house he’s purchased. We worked hard and well and were tired at the close of the work. Though I did my usual sort of work, my experience was completely different from working for money because I was helping a friend who has shared much of his good fortune with me.
And it hit me that everyone has some good fortune: no one is completely without.
Some have money, some have talent. Others have brain or brawn or both. Certainly all of us have the simple goodness of a fine human heart.
Whatever we have, we gain more of it by giving it away freely. And through simple service we demolish not only our own boundaries but also the boundaries between us and our fellow travelers. Put simply, we gain liberation.
Freedom, liberation—that’s what everyone really wants.
